Don't Go Down There Review

Pumpkin drinks are back at Starbucks (as of yesterday)! To celebrate, I am officially entering my 'spooky fall reading' era! Fall is my favorite time of the year and, as a mood reader, I typically like my reads to reflect the change in season. To kick off my season of spooky fall reads, I decided to pick up a recent release by one of my favorite psychological/domestic thriller authors.

Don't Go Down There is a domestic thriller written by author, Kiersten Modglin. It was released in February of this year.

If you would like to purchase Don't Go Down There, you can find it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. You can follow the author, Kiersten Modglin, on Instagram and Goodreads! You can also check out her website! For Kindle Unlimited users, this book is currently included with that subscription!

Spencer Edwards has a beautiful wife, two perfect children, and a sinister secret locked in his basement…

When Andi Edwards discovers her husband isn’t where he’s supposed to be and isn’t answering her calls or texts, a flurry of scenarios races through her mind.

Is he hurt?

Is he cheating?

Is he dead?

The truth, she soon finds out, is so much worse than she could’ve imagined.

As she struggles to make sense of her new and chilling reality, she must decide whether to stand by the man she loves and help protect him or walk away and let him pay for his sins.

With time running out, the secret in the basement becomes more dangerous, and the spine-chilling truth becomes clear: if she makes the wrong decision, she stands to lose much more than her marriage.

When their best laid plans come back to haunt them, what will Spencer and Andi be willing to sacrifice to survive?

I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads. I listened to this audiobook because I was searching for a short read that would keep my interest. This audiobook is relatively short (around 5--6 hours), so I decided to give it a shot. All of the narrators did a good job at bringing the story to life. I was interested in the plot from the beginning--a testament to both the author and the narrators.

This quickly entered crazy territory---as most Kiersten Modglin books do (which I usually love). Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed her other books. I don't feel like the characters had as much depth and development as her others have. I also felt like this was similar in some aspects to several other of her books--but I can't exactly put my finger on where those similarities are. Maybe this just gave off the same/similar 'vibe' as some of the author's other books?

I am knocking major points off due to a plot point/twist that made me feel, for lack of a better word, icky. This comes into play in the back half of the book, so it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book from the beginning but it certainly left me with a bad taste in my mouth (which I am sure was the intention of the author).

Overall, this wasn't my favorite read of the year but it also wasn't my least favorite. This was a quick read, which was exactly what I needed. If you are looking for a binge-worthy, fast-paced, 'read-in-a-day' kind of book, I think you might enjoy this. Due to the language, themes, and dialogue used throughout this book, I would recommend this book for readers 18+. Reader's discretion is always advised.

With all books that I read, I make a playlist to go along with the book. These playlists are full of songs which encapsulate the feeling of the story as a whole, capture the essence of a particular scene, or just remind me of one of the characters. You can find my Kiersten Modglin playlist on Apple Music or Spotify.
