I Said Yes Review

Writer's picture: Madison SandersMadison Sanders

For about 2 months last year, I went through a phase where I read several books written by the same author. I read these consecutively after I really gravitated towards this author's writing style. I read a lot of thrillers in general but I have tried to scatter these reviews so that I wasn't reviewing book exclusively written by one author for two months in a row!

I Said Yes is a psychological thriller written by author, Kiersten Modglin. It was released in February of 2020.

If you would like to purchase I Said Yes, you can find it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. You can follow the author, Kiersten Modglin, on Instagram and Goodreads! You can also check out her website! For Kindle Unlimited users, this book is currently included with that subscription!

Yes.

The word that brought me such great joy and, eventually, such heartbreak.

When Mark asked me out for the first time, I didn’t have to think twice.

I said, “Yes.”

When he asked me to marry him just a year later, the answer came as easily as the breath that followed it.

“Yes.”

When he asked me to keep his secret, my response came too quickly.

“Yes.”

Now, in front of a judge and jury, I’ll be asked the question I never anticipated.

“Did you know who the killer is?”

The answer is second nature by now.

“Yes.”

I gave this book 3.75 stars on Goodreads. This was one of the first Kiersten Modglin books that I read and I remember being very impressed with it. It is definitely dark, so if that 'isn't your thing'...this is not the book for you.

I listened to this in audiobook format and I really commend the narrator. The story, itself, was fascinating and dark but the narration really kept me on my toes. The audio production was masterful, as it has been with all of the audiobooks that I have listened to from this author.

The story was full of twists and turns and the mystery unraveled before I could even wrap my mind around the entire reveal. I read so many thrillers that it has become hard to surprise me anymore so this is a real testament to the author and her writing style.

My only 'complaint' is that I wasn't the biggest fan of the way this book left off. I think a different ending would've made this the perfect read. Ultimately, the ending didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book---I would chalk this up to just a personal preference. If you love domestic thrillers and dark, twisted mysteries, this would be a great read for you!

Overall, I think this is a really good read but it is not the place I would recommend that you start if you are looking to get into Kiersten's books. I think you should start with The Arrangement (at least read the first book) and then pick this one up. Ultimately, this is a standalone and you don't have to read her books in any specific order (with the exception of the 3 books that are a part of The Arrangement trilogy). The Arrangement is---to my understanding---one of Kiersten's most widely known and enjoyed book so far...and for good reason. Personally, I think it is a good starting point because it is a good introduction to the author's writing style and is just pure chaos from beginning to end.

Due to the language, themes, and dialogue used throughout this book, I would recommend this book for readers 18+. As always, reader's discretion is advised.

With all books that I read, I make a playlist to go along with the book. These playlists are full of songs which encapsulate the feeling of the story as a whole, capture the essence of a particular scene, or just remind me of one of the characters. You can find my Kiersten Modglin playlist on Apple Music or Spotify.
