July Book Haul!

Writer's picture: Madison SandersMadison Sanders

Another month has almost come and gone which, of course, means that it is time for another book haul! Once a month I am going to recap some of the books I got the previous month! I will be sharing with you some of the highlights of the books that I found in my ongoing Little Free Library hunts, my Goodwill/thrift store trips, any Barnes & Noble visits, and any books that I receive from authors and publishers!

Amazon Wishlist Splurges

I was on my best behavior this month and avoided any extra spending on Amazon! The urge to buy my entire book wishlist is strong, as always, but somehow I resisted.

Little Free Library Finds I didn't have the opportunity to go on any Little Free Library Hunts (or to any library sales) this month. I spent my birthday in Las Vegas and came home to start the summer semester of my Masters Program--hopefully I will have some more time soon to get back to LFL hunting!

Blind Date With a Book

Last week, I published a blog post all about the Taylor Swift inspired Blind Date With a Book packages that I bought. Here is the book that was included:

Love Radio by Ebony LaDelle

Young Adult/Romance

Prince Jones is the guy with all the answers—or so it seems. After all, at seventeen, he has his own segment on Detroit’s popular hip-hop show, Love Radio, where he dishes out advice to the brokenhearted.

Prince has always dreamed of becoming a DJ and falling in love. But being the main caretaker for his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, and his little brother means his dreams will stay just that and the only romances in his life are the ones he hears about from his listeners. Until he meets Dani Ford.

Dani isn’t checking for anybody. She’s focused on her plan: ace senior year, score a scholarship, and move to New York City to become a famous author. But her college essay keeps tripping her up and acknowledging what’s blocking her means dealing with what happened at that party a few months ago. And that’s one thing Dani can’t do.

When the romantic DJ meets the ambitious writer, sparks fly. Prince is smitten, but Dani’s not looking to get derailed. She gives Prince just three dates to convince her that he’s worth falling for. Three dates for the love expert to take his own advice, and just maybe change two lives forever.

I didn't own this book and was glad to add it to my collection! I am always down for a cute romance novel and this sounds like it will be everything I need it to be. This is such a welcomed addition to my bookshelf!

Gifted books from Publishers

While I have had quite a few authors reach out to send me their books for review, I have recently started receiving recent (or advanced) releases directly from authors/publishers.

The List of Things by Emma Miller

Romance

Every golden retriever needs their black cat…

Despite being in a hate-hate relationship with the thought of romance in her own life, Kamryn Hart adores it in the fictional sense. Rom-coms, romantic TV shows, you name it. That doesn’t stop her from living her life without connections, or serious relationships. When the year is coming to an end, and Kamryn is helping the university’s heartthrob football player with one last study session, she’s presented with an opportunity that’s just too good to turn down, but also way too good to be true. A list of romantic things that she thought could only happen on the big screen, and an infuriatingly charming quarterback willing to tick them off one by one to show her just how fun romance can be.

Star quarterback, and hot ticket item at Seattle Pike University, Bellamy Archer is nothing short of an all american football dream. Hot, charming, and completely in love with the thought of love. Bellamy is looking for memories and excitement after finals are over. With three weeks before football summer sessions Bellamy makes a promise to Kamryn that he intends on keeping. Kamryn enters the agreement warily, but will she continue to believe romance is a farce, or will she break the only rule she’s set, no strings attached?

Last week, I wrote about the nicest and most thoughtful book mail I have ever received---a box filled with goodies, including an early copy of this new release! My review of this is coming soon and I am thrilled to share this story with you. Thank you to the author, Emma, for the gifted copy! This one is OUT NOW! Happy book birthday to Emma and The List of Things!

One Christmas Morning by Rachel Greenlaw

Romance/Holiday

Eva has spent the past three years burying herself in her work, trying to forget the heartbreaking events of the Christmas that ripped her world apart. And this year, on the eve of her shop launch, the last thing Eva wants is to drive to the wild moors of Cornwall to attend her friends Hallie and Kian’s Christmas party. But at her husband James’ insistence, here they are. Worse still, Hallie announces she is pregnant, bringing Eva’s pain to the surface.

Overwhelmed by her friend’s news and the bittersweet memories of past Christmases, Eva tries to sneak back to London in the middle of the night. But as the clock strikes midnight, she is visited by the ghost of her beloved grandmother. Gran tells Eva that if she doesn’t face her ghosts head-on and stop shutting out her loved ones, she risks losing them all forever.

When Eva wakes on Christmas morning, she finds herself living not her own life, but that of her hardworking assistant, Diana, whose overflowing inbox isn’t the only secret she’s been keeping. The next day, she wakes on Christmas morning again, this time in the body of Hallie’s sister, Natalie. As Eva lives Christmas Day again and again through the perspectives of her friends, she is offered a glimpse into the lives of those she has been pushing away. With each Christmas Day comes a new lesson—and an insight into the secrets and struggles her loved ones have been hiding. To move forward, Eva must let go of the past. But is it too late to fix her future?

The holiday reads have officially started coming my way and I can't say that I'm mad about it at all! I have several Christmas/Holiday themed books to help ring in the season...and I will binge them all---but not until November. Spooky season/Fall is my favorite time of the year, I can't betray my favorite season like that! I will definitely have this one lined up whenever I need some Christmas magic! Thank you to the author, to Goodreads, and to Avon Books for sending me an early copy of this book! This book will be OUT 10/17!

High Time by Hannah Rothschild

Contemporary/Literary Fiction

In the months leading up to the Brexit referendum, Ayesha, the beautiful, young secret daughter of the late Enyon Trelawney, has married the much older thuggish banker Tomlinson Sleet with whom she has a young daughter, Stella. Ayesha is busy restoring the once run-down Trelawney Castle in Cornwall, which Sleet has bought, to its former glory, as well as studying art at the Courtauld in London. The elderly Countess Clarissa—still ensconced on the property—the host of a camp television show, is about to head into a disastrous marriage. Lady Jane has separated from the hopeless Trelawney heir Kitto, who is crazier than ever, and found an enlightened woman to keep her company abroad. Sleet is becoming increasingly difficult, distracted by the seductive and ruthless bitcoin goddess Zamora, but Kitto’s sister Blaze and her husband, Joshua, will support Ayesha’s clever plan as she discovers shocking secrets, takes action, and brings the family together.

This is a bit different than what I typically reach for in a book, but I am always looking to expand my reading horizons. Plus, Knopf publishing continues to spoil me with all the upcoming releases they send---and they haven't lead me astray yet! Thank you Knopf Publishing for the gifted copy! This book is OUT NOW!

It has been a good month for book hauls, I hope you have enjoyed recapping some of my recent finds with me!

As always, thank you for reading! XO, Madison
