Reading series has been very daunting for me recently. I chalk this up to my mood reading tendencies and my indecisiveness. I prefer standalone novels. Weird, I know, but I like that I finish the book and get to pick a brand new one. Though I haven't read and reviewed many full series here on the blog, there are plenty of book series that I adore. Today, I am reviewing book 3 in a series that I thoroughly enjoyed!
Sidebar: I went back and looked and I think this actually is the first full series that I have reviewed on the blog, so this is a big day!
The Amendment is a thriller written by Kiersten Modglin. It is the third book in Kiersten Modglin's The Arrangement series. It was released in February of 2022. If you haven't already, you can read my review of The Arrangement here!
If you would like to purchase The Amendment you can find it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. You can follow the author, Kiersten Modglin, on Instagram and Goodreads! You can also check out her website!
First, there was THE ARRANGEMENT-a scandalous story about Peter and Ainsley Greenburg's attempt to fix their marriage, no matter the cost.
Next, came THE AMENDMENT-with their darkest secrets revealed, the couple set out in a treacherous attempt to repair what had been broken. Now, Peter and Ainsley's marriage will be put to one final test with THE ATONEMENT.
Ainsley Greenburg has always been a fixer. But her latest attempt to repair her marriage left it more damaged than ever before. Now, trapped in a vicious game of cat and mouse with the man she thought she knew, Ainsley must do what it takes to put out the fire their arrangement ignited. But it won't be that simple. As Peter closes in on her, Ainsley finds herself driven down a path of paranoia and fear. Her only hope lies in her ability to trust her instincts, but they've let her down before. This time, there's so much more at stake, and the secrets waiting to be revealed will change everything. Whom can she trust when her world is up in flames? One wrong decision could cost her everything she has left-her family, her home, and her life. And, with a final showdown looming, Ainsley must decide what she's willing to let burn in order to survive. As the blaze continues to heat up, it's only a matter of time before someone must atone for their sins.
I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads. This, like the first book, was pure chaos---all the way through! I raved about the first book but series usually make me nervous. Sometimes the quality isn't there or the original work should just be left alone. In this case, I thought the second book was just as good as the first! I was pleasantly surprised as I have been with all of Kiersten Modglin's books.
I listened to the audiobook (because that is how I read the first two books) and I enjoyed the production just as much as I did with the first book. Narration is a big thing for me. I have stopped reading books because I didn't vibe with the narrator(s)...some voices can be a bit grating, others put on fake accents or other voices that just aren't convincing, and some are hard to follow. I thought this audiobook (like this entire series) was expertly cast---the narrators kept me engaged throughout.
This book was a good send-off to the series and to Peter and Ainsley. While there are still thrilling elements, this book offered less of them than the first two books did. The Atonement follows the back and forth between Peter and Ainsley that the second book stops at. Kiersten provides a really interesting and satisfying conclusion to the series. Though nothing can compare to the absolute chaos that the first book provided, this was still a fun read. Both Peter and Ainsley get the ending that they deserve.
Overall, I would reccommend this book for readers 18+. Though I love this book for how twisted it is, there is frequent dark/adult themes, dialogue, and language featured throughout. This may be self explanatory but if you want to read this series, read it in order.
Standalone books in interconnected series (characters that all connect but can be read somewhat interchangeably) are becoming more popular but this is a series that should be read in order. If you are looking for a thriller author with a stellar and extensive backlog to read, want a really dark and twisted thriller, or just enjoy pure chaos---this is the series for you!
With all books that I read, I make a playlist to go along with the book. These playlists are full of songs which encapsulate the feeling of the story as a whole, capture the essence of a particular scene, or just remind me of one of the characters. You can find my playlist for The Arrangement Series on Apple Music or Spotify.
